Coinbase Ventures has outlined a roadmap for where it expects the next wave of crypto value creation in 2026, centering on real-world asset perpetuals, specialized exchanges, \u201cnext-gen DeFi,\u201d and the convergence of crypto with AI and robotics. The firm presents the document as an answer to the recurring founder question: \u201cWhat should I build next?\u201d and says it is \u201cactively looking for the right teams to invest behind in these categories.\u201d<\/p>\n

The team argues that 2025 quietly reset crypto\u2019s foundations. They highlight \u201cstablecoin infrastructure reshaping payments,\u201d cross-chain proofs collapsing settlement times \u201cthat once took days,\u201d and new DEX models that enabled \u201cmarkets for everything onchain.\u201d Regardless of current price action, Coinbase Ventures writes<\/a>: \u201cWe are as bullish as ever about what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Major Crypto Trends For 2026<\/h2>\n

The first major theme is real-world asset derivatives. Kinji Steimetz argues that \u201cRWA perpetuals\u201d are emerging as the fastest way to bring offchain assets onchain, describing perpetuals as \u201ccrypto\u2019s most proven trading product\u201d and \u201ca structurally faster and more flexible path than tokenization.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because perpetuals do not require custody of an underlying, Coinbase Ventures expects \u201cthe perpification of everything,\u201d with \u201cmarkets [forming] around virtually anything,\u201d from private companies to economic data prints. Steimetz also links this to macro integration, noting that as crypto traders become more sophisticated, they will seek onchain exposure to \u201coil, inflation breakevens, credit spreads, and volatility.\u201d<\/p>\n

A second cluster focuses on market structure and trading interfaces. On Solana, Steimetz points to \u201cProp-AMMs\u201d where resting liquidity is only executed via aggregators, insulating LPs from \u201cpredatory flow.\u201d This \u201cprop-driven approach,\u201d the blog argues, could \u201cmeaningfully advance market structure innovation ahead of base-layer improvements\u201d and is not limited to Solana spot markets.<\/p>\n

In parallel, Coinbase Ventures sees prediction markets as \u201cone of the leading consumer crypto applications,\u201d but still hampered by fragmentation reminiscent of early DeFi. Jonathan King expects \u201cprediction market<\/a> aggregators\u201d to become the \u201cdominant interface layer,\u201d consolidating more than $600 million in liquidity and providing an Axiom-like terminal for event contracts. Perpetual futures, it argues, are evolving from isolated venues into building blocks for capital-efficient systems where users can \u201csimultaneously hedge, earn, and leverage without sacrificing liquidity.\u201d Coinbase Ventures notes that perp DEX volumes have reached roughly $1.4 trillion per month and grown about 300% year-on-year, and expects 2026 to see deeper integrations with lending protocols so collateral can earn yield while backing leveraged positions.<\/p>\n

On credit, King calls unsecured, credit-based money markets \u201cDeFi\u2019s next frontier,\u201d pointing to $1.3 trillion in revolving, unsecured US credit lines as the addressable opportunity. The blog envisions models that blend onchain reputation with offchain data to unlock \u201cunsecured lending at scale,\u201d while warning that the core challenge is \u201cdesigning sustainable risk models that scale.\u201d If that can be achieved, Coinbase Ventures argues that DeFi becomes \u201cgenuine financial infrastructure that can outcompete traditional banking rails.\u201d<\/p>\n

Privacy is framed as a prerequisite for institutional and mainstream adoption. Ethan Oak notes that institutions and professional traders \u201ccannot trade if they constantly leak their strategies,\u201d and that ordinary users do not want \u201ctheir entire financial history\u201d exposed onchain. The team sees growing developer energy around privacy-preserving assets such as Zcash<\/a>, private orderbooks and borrow-lend protocols, and \u201cdedicated blockchains for payments touting privacy as a raison d\u2019etre.\u201d They highlight advanced cryptography \u2013 \u201cZKPs, FHE, MPC, TEEs\u201d \u2013 as tools to let blockchains \u201cmaintain their verifiability while reducing user\u2019s public exposure to bad actors.\u201d<\/p>\n

The final category connects crypto with AI and robotics. On robotics, Steimetz points to a shortage of \u201cfine-grained physical interaction data such as grip, pressure, or multi-object manipulation,\u201d and suggests that incentivized data-collection schemes inspired by DePIN \u201ccould offer a viable framework\u201d for scaling these datasets.<\/p>\n

On identity, Hoolie Tejwani warns that we are \u201capproaching the tipping point where everything you see on an internet connected digital screen will be disassociated and indistinguishable from human provenance vs. AI generated.\u201d Coinbase Ventures argues that \u201ca combination of biometrics, cryptographic signing, and open source developer standards\u201d will be crucial to any \u201cproof of humanity\u201d solution, noting that Worldcoin<\/a> has been \u201cahead of the curve\u201d but stressing they \u201cwould love to support multiple approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, King describes AI for smart-contract development as nearing its \u201cGitHub Copilot moment,\u201d predicting that AI agents will let \u201cnon-technical founders [launch] onchain businesses in hours, not months,\u201d by handling \u201csmart contract code generation, security reviews, and continuous monitoring.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to 2026, Coinbase Ventures says it is \u201cenergized by the builders taking big swings and pushing the onchain economy forward,\u201d but concedes that \u201cthe most exciting projects often come from places no one expects,\u201d leaving the door open for theses that have yet to be written.<\/p>\n
