Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has declared Midnight officially launched, describing it as the \u201cfirst fourth generation cryptocurrency\u201d and claiming it has already become \u201ca billion dollar ecosystem heading to a $10 billion ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a December 9 livestream<\/a> from Colorado, recorded after he was forced to cancel an appearance at Abu Dhabi Finance Week due to severe food poisoning and a jet malfunction, Hoskinson framed the launch as both a technical milestone and an ideological statement about how cryptocurrencies should be built and distributed.<\/p>\n

Cardano Founder Touts Midnight\u2019s Fair Launch<\/h2>\n

Despite saying he had \u201cnot eaten in two days\u201d and was \u201ca little faded,\u201d the Cardano founder focused on the scale and duration of the effort behind Midnight. \u201cWe worked on it for six years,\u201d he said, noting \u201cmany false starts\u201d and several technology changes before the team converged on \u201ca roadmap and a technology stack that we feel is going to be the tech stack of the future.\u201d Midnight\u2019s rollout, he stressed, is structured in four phases, with the project now \u201cin the very first phase\u201d of that plan.<\/p>\n

The next stage, according to the Cardan founder, will significantly expand Midnight\u2019s capabilities. Over the coming months, the team intends to bring up a federated mainnet and an incentivized testnet, then activate \u201chybrid DApps with each ecosystem.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said \u201cthe next nine months is going to be a lot of fun\u201d but also \u201ca lot of work for all of us,\u201d pointing to features such as \u201ctrue hybrid applications, true multi-resource consensus, [and] true post-quantum folding schemes\u201d that aim to \u201cadvance the state-of-the-art of all of the zero knowledge<\/a> stacks.\u201d The overarching goal, he argued, is \u201ccreating a natural easy way for people [to] get their privacy back.\u201d<\/p>\n

Privacy and chain-agnostic interoperability are at the core of how Hoskinson positioned Midnight. He said users are \u201cstarting to realize and starting to wake up that their privacy is not a guarantee and it\u2019s not a given,\u201d and criticized existing systems as \u201cdesigned from the ground up to take your privacy from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Midnight, by contrast, is framed as infrastructure that can be used by \u201cevery single blockchain in the space.\u201d \u201cWhat makes Midnight so special is the fact that Midnight is for everyone,\u201d he said. \u201cIt has equal application to Solana users and Avalanche users and Ethereum users and Binance users and Cardano users and Bitcoin users and everyone else in between.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Cardano repeatedly emphasized distribution and launch mechanics as a deliberate rejection of the venture-driven model that dominates much of the industry. He highlighted that Midnight was brought to market \u201cin a completely decentralized way\u201d with \u201cno ICO, no insiders, no VC participation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The outcome, in his view, is that \u201cevery single user enjoys the fact that it had a fair launch and a fair distribution and every single person was on equal footing through the Glacier Drop<\/a>, the Scavenger Hunt, and now the exchange distributions.\u201d<\/p>\n

On that basis, he argued that \u201cit\u2019s still possible in 2025 to launch a cryptocurrency the way Satoshi did it\u201d and \u201cstill possible to build something with vision and values where we can do better and not hand the world over to centralized actors, the finance of old.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoskinson Warns Of Regulatory Overreach<\/h2>\n

He also used the Midnight launch to issue a broader warning about regulation and the direction of the industry if privacy-preserving infrastructure is not defended. \u201cRight now the laws are being written. They\u2019re written the wrong way,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the rulemaking is done the wrong way, every single thing that makes cryptocurrency special will be taken from us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoskinson rejected a future where \u201conly custodial wallets\u201d exist, \u201cevery single person has to be KYC and AML<\/a>,\u201d and \u201conly five or 10 protocols are pre-selected\u201d and \u201carmchair controlled by a small cabal of international bankers.\u201d Instead, he said, \u201cI want to live in a world where the protocols preserve and protect your rights as a human, your agency as a human, your economic identity as a human.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hoskinson described Midnight as \u201cprobably the fastest growing and most vocal project we\u2019ve ever built,\u201d pointing to \u201chundreds of ambassadors\u201d coming online and a rapidly filling Discord, which he framed as a gathering point for those who believe in \u201cfreedom of association, commerce, and expression.\u201d<\/p>\n

He ended with a direct call to action: \u201cI want you to join the Discord. I want you to become an ambassador and tell each and every person that we can do better. And I want you to build on Midnight.\u201d Whatever network developers come from, he said, \u201cjust build something and show the world that you can do interesting and cool things,\u201d adding that for him and his team, \u201cwe\u2019re in it for life.\u201d<\/p>\n
