In a recent appearance<\/a> on CNN Prima News\u2019 Partie Terezie Tom\u00e1nkov\u00e1, Governor of the Czech National Bank (CNB) Ale\u0161 Michl discussed the institution\u2019s monetary stance, its growing gold reserves, and the possibility of investing in Bitcoin. The interview, originally reported<\/a> by local media outlet Seznam Zpr\u00e1vy, offered an unusually candid glimpse into the central bank\u2019s strategy for foreign exchange reserves and the governor\u2019s personal thoughts on BTC.<\/p>\n

Will Czech\u2019s Central Bank Buy Bitcoin?<\/h2>\n

Michl began by reaffirming his skepticism toward the Czech Republic\u2019s adoption of the euro, emphasizing that joining the single currency would not solve the country\u2019s economic challenges. \u201cThe euro<\/a> is no salvation,\u201d he stated, underscoring that the CNB currently perceives limited strategic advantage in relinquishing the Czech Koruna.<\/p>\n

In addition to discussing the euro, Michl spoke at length about the CNB\u2019s ambitions to strengthen and diversify its foreign exchange reserves. Over the past few years, the bank has sharply increased its gold<\/a> holdings, going from eight tonnes to the current fifty tonnes, and has plans to expand further.<\/p>\n

The governor provided specific details on the timeline, saying, \u201cWe\u2019ll have 100 tons [\u2026] we\u2019ll make it in about 3 and a half years and we\u2019ll have the most in the history of the Czech Republic.\u201d He stressed that the CNB\u2019s method of risk mitigation hinges on distributing reserves across various asset classes: \u201cWe have foreign exchange reserves and we need to invest them well, diversify [\u2026] so that between each other, those asset classes are diversified.\u201d<\/p>\n

While gold remains the cornerstone of the CNB\u2019s reserve policy, Michl also addressed the growing conversation around Bitcoin. Responding to a direct question about whether the CNB had ever considered placing funds into Bitcoin, he acknowledged that this is a question which \u201coften permeates political discussion especially from young people.\u201d<\/p>\n

He revealed, \u201cYes, I had Bitcoin in my mind.\u201d However, he was quick to clarify that such a notion has not been adopted as formal policy: \u201cI was considering Bitcoin [\u2026] but luckily there are seven of us on the board and I think the gold will be enough for now. But we can keep debating it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michl explained that the central bank\u2019s priority remains \u201clow inflation<\/a> [and] financial stability,\u201d making a large-scale foray into Bitcoin unlikely in the near term. Still, he acknowledged Bitcoin\u2019s allure as a potential hedge in a diversified portfolio, describing it as \u201ca very interesting thing [\u2026] as a diversification against other assets.\u201d<\/p>\n

He underscored that any potential Bitcoin purchase under consideration would be small, especially compared to the CNB\u2019s ongoing accumulation of gold. \u201cI was thinking of buying just a few bitcoins. I didn\u2019t mean to invest massively in it while we\u2019re still on gold,\u201d Michl explained.<\/p>\n
