For decades, countries like Canada prospered under what we called the rules-based international order. They joined institutions, praised international principles, and benefited from predictability. And because of that, Canada could pursue values-based foreign policies under its protection.<\/p>\n

American hegemony <\/a>in particular helped provide public goods, open sea lanes, a stable financial system, collective security, and support for frameworks for resolving disputes. Yet this bargain no longer works.<\/p>\n

Evidence of this system\u2019s collapse is that Trump took away the landslide victory for Canadian conservatives by telling the Canadians every day for about two months before their election that he was going to annex them as the 51st state.<\/p>\n

Unsurprisingly, the Canadians then voted in the Liberal Carney instead as the anti-Trump candidate.<\/p>\n
