Block, Inc.<\/strong>\u00a0(NYSE:<\/a>XYZ<\/a>)\u00a0CEO Jack Dorsey<\/strong> said Thursday that advancements in artificial intelligence models and efforts to streamline operations drove the company\u2019s choice to lay off nearly half its workforce.<\/p>\n

Push Toward \u2018Functionalization<\/h2>\n

During the company\u2019s fourth-quarter earnings call, Dorsey was probed about the timing and rationale behind the neary 40% workforce reduction.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been working very hard to functionalize the company. That’s a big part of what gives us more confidence in making this move,\u201d he responded.<\/p>\n

Dorsey said that Block effectively houses two separate companies\u2014likely referring to Square <\/strong>and Cash App<\/strong>\u2014with independent corporate structures, but with a lot of \u201cduplication.\u201d<\/p>\n
