\u201cGoogle\u2019s introducing a 2029 timeline to secure the quantum era with post-quantum cryptography (PQC) migration,\u201d the search giant stated in a blog post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

It stated that urgency stems from two key threats, including \u201cstore-now-decrypt-later\u201d attacks. This is where bad actors collect encrypted data today to decrypt it once quantum computers are powerful enough.<\/p>\n

The second threat is the future risk quantum computers pose to digital signatures used in authentication, such as for crypto assets.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThis new timeline reflects migration needs for the PQC era in light of progress on quantum computing hardware development, quantum error correction, and quantum factoring resource estimates.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Quantum Threat to Cryptography<\/h2>\n

Google stated that quantum computers will pose a \u201csignificant threat\u201d to current cryptographic standards, and specifically to encryption and digital signatures.\u00a0This directly impacts<\/a> crypto assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, which use these signatures and cryptography to secure the networks.<\/p>\n

The Bitcoin debate has been simmering for the past year, and the community is split. Some argue for upgrading cryptography and enabling voluntary migration to quantum-resistant signatures, while others say intervention would violate Bitcoin\u2019s core principle that private keys control coins.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m sure Bitcoin can agree on a path forward, write and test a series of updates, soft fork them in, and fully migrate 50 million addresses in three years. Especially with how proactive the core devs are being,\u201d said<\/a> Bitcoiner Nic Carter.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In February, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled<\/a> a quantum-resistant roadmap for the network.<\/p>\n

Serious Investors Unfazed<\/h2>\n

Galaxy Digital\u2019s research head Alex Thorn said<\/a> earlier this month that the risk is \u201creal but recognized.\u201d\u00a0He said that not all wallets are equally vulnerable, and most of them are not at risk today. \u201cFunds are at risk only when public keys are exposed on-chain,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin bull Michael Saylor said<\/a> in February that the industry \u201cwould see it coming\u201d and it would prompt coordinated software upgrades across global banking systems, internet infrastructure, crypto protocols, consumer devices, and AI networks.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, a March 11 report<\/a> from Ark Invest claimed that the threat is likely years or decades away. \u201cToday\u2019s quantum systems lack the capabilities required to compromise Bitcoin. Meaningful breakthroughs would disrupt internet security first, triggering coordinated responses well beyond Bitcoin,\u201d the researchers wrote.<\/p>\n

They said it would be a \u201cgradual technological progression\u2014not a sudden \u2018Q-day\u2019 event,\u201d giving markets and the Bitcoin network time to adapt.<\/p>\n

Google doesn\u2019t appear to share its confidence, however.<\/p>\n
