The Trend Continues Into 2026, Industry Report Suggests"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Retail crypto traders who have had their accounts hacked, or fell victim to last year&#8217;s <strong>Coinbase <\/strong><a class=\"ticker-link\" data-ticker=\"COIN\" data-exchange=\"NASDAQ\" href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/quote\/COIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(NASDAQ:<\/a><a class=\"ticker\" href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/quote\/COIN\">COIN<\/a>)<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/quote\/coin\"> <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/markets\/cryptocurrency\/25\/05\/45441997\/coinbase-hit-by-data-breach-refuses-to-pay-20m-ransom\">scam <\/a>which saw one poor soul<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-05-17\/an-artist-lost-a-2-million-crypto-nest-egg-in-coinbase-s-hack\" rel=\"nofollow\"> lose over $2 million<\/a>, know how stressful it is to wake up to an empty wallet. Worse yet, there is almost no recourse for recovery.\u00a0 Who&#8217;s stealing all those Bitcoins? Where are all these hackers coming from?\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North Korea. That&#8217;s where. Around <a href=\"https:\/\/indd.adobe.com\/view\/595e40e3-3953-4d4b-aeaa-3e9954d5d844\" rel=\"nofollow\">60% of total value stolen in crypto last year<\/a> could be traced to cybercriminals in North Korea, according to Web3 security services firm <strong>CertiK.<\/strong> So far this year, North Korea-linked activity accounted for 55% of global crypto losses. It looks like they are maintaining the trend. CeriK estimated that 185 incidents resulted in at least $1.1 billion in total losses to cryptocurrency holders since January. Of that amount, around $621 million was attributed to sources in North Korea. Most of that came from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.benzinga.com\/crypto\/cryptocurrency\/26\/04\/51905163\/crypto-billionaire-offers-talks-north-korea-linked-hacker-290m-defi-exploit\"> $291 million KelpDAO exploit.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>CertiK, founded in 2017 by professors from Yale and Columbia universities, released their 23-page report on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Social relationship building is the dominant attack vector.
