Two economists recently discussed the forthcoming Nobel Prize in Economic Science and the possible outcome for this year\u2019s ceremony, naming Ethereum\u2019s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, as their unconventional pick for his contribution to crypto.<\/p>\n

Economists Make Non-Traditional Pick For Nobel Prize In Economics<\/h2>\n

On Tuesday, Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabbarok discussed their predictions for the upcoming Nobel Prize in Economics winner. In The Marginal Revolution Podcast, the two economists shared<\/a> their thoughts on \u201cquestionable\u201d past winners and who they believed could win the prize this year, exploring a non-traditional pick like Vitalik Buterin.<\/p>\n

Cowen proposed Ethereum\u2019s founder as his unusual choice, citing his contributions to crypto. He considers that Buterin, unlike the economists he could think of, \u201cactually did something on monetary economics\u201d and contributed to the \u201ctheory of crypto.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tabbarok agreed with his co-host, noting that economists<\/a> are starting to take a greater interest in the industry \u201cas it has become a bigger share of the economy,\u201d but highlighted that the fundamentals of crypto were all developed by computer scientists.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he argued that crypto is an \u201capplied mechanism design in the world,\u201d noting that Bitcoin and Ethereum are incredible examples. Tabbarok emphasized they are working in the real world, even if many would have considered it \u201cimpossible\u201d years ago.<\/p>\n

Cowen also listed Vitalik Buterin\u2019s<\/a> contributions, questioning what else would be required for Ethereum\u2019s founder candidacy to be considered:<\/p>\n

Vitalik built a platform, created a currency, you could say, refuted Mises\u2019 regression theorem in the process, obviously following in the footsteps of Satoshi, but my goodness, what does someone have to do to get a Nobel Prize?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Ethereum\u2019s Founder Case For The Prize<\/h2>\n

The economist also underscored the network\u2019s performance, noting ETH\u2019s hundreds of billions of dollars in market valuation. As of this writing, Ethereum is the biggest chain by total value locked (TVL), with $45.9 billion and a 57.4% dominance.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, ETH, the second-largest cryptocurrency that powers the Ethereum ecosystem, has a market capitalization of nearly $293 billion, according to CoinMarketCap Data.<\/p>\n

Adding to Buterin\u2019s case, Tabbarok pointed out that Ethereum\u2019s founder has continuously contributed toward the network\u2019s mechanism design by moving from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) mechanism to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS).<\/p>\n

The economist considered keeping the network running while making the change was a notable feat. \u201cYou ever seen those\u00a0videos of these guys in Saudi Arabia\u00a0where they change the car tires while the car is moving? That\u2019s what Ethereum did. Incredible,\u201d Tabbarok stated.<\/p>\n

Cowen also argued that Buterin\u2019s input on monetary economics is noteworthy, as it exceeds that of other economists in many related topics: \u201cThere is no economist who has anything better to say on the topics he writes on. And that, to me, it\u2019s worth a lot in this consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n

To finish their case on Ethereum\u2019s founder candidacy, the economists highlighted<\/a> Buterin\u2019s charity work, citing his many crypto donations valued at millions of dollars to different charities.<\/p>\n

The economist briefly hopped into the ongoing debate about the Bitcoin creator\u2019s whereabouts. Tabbarok suggested that Satoshi Nakamoto should have gotten a Nobel Prize in economics but shared that he doesn\u2019t see it possible as Nakamoto is likely dead.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Cowen refuted his colleague\u2019s theory<\/a> about Bitcoin\u2019s creator status but agreed that he wouldn\u2019t get the prize as he doesn\u2019t \u201cthink you can give it to someone you cannot identify.\u201d<\/p>\n
