Software developer Peter Todd has emphatically stated that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto<\/a>, the enigmatic figure behind Bitcoin, in a recent interview with Bloomberg. This assertion comes in response to the HBO documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery, which suggests Todd may be linked to Nakamoto through circumstantial evidence.<\/p>\n

Peter Todd Responds To HBO Documentary Claims<\/h2>\n

In an email <\/a>to Bloomberg on Wednesday, Todd clarified, \u201cI am not Satoshi,\u201d directly addressing the film\u2019s implications. The documentary, directed by Cullen Hoback, suggests that Nakamoto may have inadvertently used Todd\u2019s Internet message board account to continue discussions started under the Nakamoto pseudonym.\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, Todd refuted this claim, pointing out that at the time of the posts, his account was named \u201cretep,\u201d and that users on the Bitcoin message board typically used anonymous handles.<\/p>\n

Todd further explained that if he had mistakenly continued Nakamoto\u2019s post<\/a> under the \u201cretep\u201d account, he could have easily created a new account to post under his real name.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instead, Todd disclosed that he later changed the \u201cretep\u201d account to reflect his actual identity. \u201cIf Cullen had actually wanted to find Satoshi<\/a>, he could have easily fact-checked this,\u201d Todd noted, suggesting that the documentary might have been more about generating buzz than uncovering the truth.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Interestingly, Todd also criticized Hoback\u2019s approach as a \u201cthreadbare, circumstantial, coincidence-based\u201d attempt to identify Nakamoto.<\/p>\n

Peter Todd Expresses Safety Fears<\/h2>\n

Bloomberg discloses that the documentary\u2019s claims have raised concerns for Todd\u2019s safety, particularly given that wallets attributed to the real Satoshi Nakamoto are believed to hold around 1 million Bitcoin, currently valued at about $62 billion. Todd expressed his apprehension, stating:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Obviously, falsely accusing someone of having tens of billions of dollars puts them at risk from robbery and kidnappings. He\u2019s putting my life at risk to promote his movie.<\/p>\n

The true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has long been a topic of speculation <\/a>since Bitcoin\u2019s inception in January 2009. Over the years, various individuals have been suggested as potential candidates for this elusive figure.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In 2014, Newsweek claimed that physicist Dorian Nakamoto was the creator, a claim he vehemently denied. Similarly, in 2015, the New York Times speculated that computer scientist Nick Szabo might be Nakamoto. Australian entrepreneur Craig Wright has also claimed to be Satoshi, although a UK judge ruled that he is not the creator of Bitcoin.<\/p>\n

At the time of writing, the largest cryptocurrency<\/a> on the market is trading at $61,000, down over 2% in the last 24 hours amid the broader market correction that has seen significant liquidity exit.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The total valuation of the crypto market currently stands at $2.088 trillion, representing an outflow of over $200 million in the last two weeks, after hitting a near two-month high of $2.29 trillion at the end of September.\u00a0<\/p>\n
