President Donald Trump is doubling down on his goal of making the United States the \u201ccrypto capital of the world,\u201d while also weighing in on a growing national fight over who should regulate prediction markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump Says CFTC Rules Will Help Crypto \u2018Thrive\u2019<\/h2>\n

In a new statement shared Tuesday on Truth Social, Trump said it is \u201ccritically important\u201d that the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) retain \u201cexclusive authority\u201d over prediction markets<\/a>, and he added that the sector \u201cwill thrive\u201d under that approach.<\/p>\n

The president also framed the issue as part of building what he described as \u201crules of the road\u201d that set a \u201cGold Standard for the States.\u201d He said other countries are pursuing this \u201cnew form of Financial Market,\u201d and the US must remain competitive.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump tied <\/a>the prediction market question directly to the broader push for US leadership in crypto, writing that while the US is currently the global \u201cCrypto (Bitcoin, etc.) Capital of the World,\u201d other countries are trying to replace America in that role\u2014and that they \u201cwon\u2019t let that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks came after an investigation by The New York Times published Sunday that described how the CFTC has played an active role in advancing prediction markets \u201cat virtually every turn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The report also alleged that the regulator has softened its enforcement posture <\/a>toward digital currencies. It said the agency did so by changing internal staffing\u2014specifically culling ranks and sidelining career officials\u2014steps the investigation suggested reflect a more permissive regulatory direction.<\/p>\n

States Clamp Down On Prediction Markets<\/h2>\n

Prediction markets are increasingly on the defensive as states move to restrict them, often arguing they operate like \u201cunlicensed casinos and violate state gaming laws.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

On one side of the debate are Trump and allies within the CFTC, who argue that prediction markets are truly \u201cmarkets\u201d and should be treated like other federally regulated trading venues<\/a>, such as securities markets and commodities markets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the other side, a growing group of governors and state attorneys general\u2014drawn from both political parties\u2014contend that event contract betting, particularly when it involves sports, is essentially gambling. They argue it should therefore be regulated at the state level in the same way casinos and lotteries are.<\/p>\n

Minnesota has become a focal point in this fight. The Democratic governor, Tim Walz, signed a law last week that would ban prediction market sites from operating in the state\u2014described as the first-of-its-kind legislation<\/a> in the nation. The administration filed a lawsuit aimed at asserting the CFTC\u2019s authority over Minnesota\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n
