Brazil has officially banned Sam Altman\u2019s Worldcoin, a controversial crypto project known for its use of iris-scanning technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On 24 January 2025, the National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) of Brazil <\/span>released a statement <\/span><\/a>saying it \u201chas decided to apply a preventive measure to the company Tools for Humanity \u2013 TFH to suspend the offer of cryptocurrency or any other financial compensation for the collection of irises of data subjects in Brazil.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The authorities found that by\u00a0<\/span>influencing\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>decision regarding the provision of their biometric data, the company made the weight of the payment offered even greater <\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe measure taken against the company Tools for Humanity comes into effect on January 25\u201d the announcement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Worldcoin is a crypto project co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, with the goal of creating a global financial network.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The project seeks to distribute its cryptocurrency to individuals worldwide in exchange for their biometric data\u2014specifically, iris scans.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These scans are collected using a device called the \u201cOrb,\u201d captures unique biometric identifiers to verify an individual\u2019s identity (World ID) and ensure they are not registering multiple times.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>According to the company,\u00a0<\/span>the World ID\u00a0<\/span>would\u00a0<\/span>allow\u00a0<\/span>proof that the holder\u00a0<\/span>is a\u00a0<\/span>unique living human\u00a0<\/span>being\u00a0<\/span>and would promote\u00a0<\/span>greater\u00a0<\/span>digital security in the context of the expansion of artificial intelligence tools,\u201d the Brazilian government said. \u201cIn a preventive analysis, the\u00a0General Coordination of\u00a0Inspection\u00a0understood that the granting of monetary compensation\u00a0by the company, through the offering of cryptocurrencies,\u00a0may harm the obtaining of consent from the holder of\u00a0personal data.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
